The Africa Clinical Research Network, a significant milestone in advancing African clinical trials, was formally launched on March 3 in Kigali, Rwanda, on the margins of the Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC).

At the launch event, Dr. Tariro Makadzange, CEO of ACRN, emphasised the network’s significance in the current global health landscape:

“ACRN aims to play a critical role in developing Africa’s life sciences industry. Investments in science and research are crucial for economic growth and healthcare advancement. The continent must contribute meaningfully to global clinical development while addressing its growing healthcare needs. With an increasing burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases, we will leverage digital technology, a network of highly skilled professionals, and research sites across multiple African countries. Our approach prioritises engaging communities and fostering a deeper understanding of how research can improve lives.”

Despite Africa’s significant genetic diversity and population that accounts for nearly a fifth of the global population, the number of clinical trials conducted on the continent remains disproportionately low. Understanding African genetic diversity is essential for developing safe and effective therapies tailored to local populations.

Guest of honour at the launch, which was attended by a cross-section of medical and health experts, scientists, researchers and government officials, Rwanda’s Health Minister of State Dr. Yvan Butera, said:

“Rwanda is honoured to be part of this significant milestone as we celebrate the official launch of ACRN here in Kigali. The sustainable conduct of clinical trials, the strengthening of regulatory frameworks, and the strategic utilisation of existing infrastructure are essential to advancing healthcare and medical research in Rwanda and across the continent. The Ministry of Health is committed to walking this journey with ACRN. It looks forward to seeing the integration of clinical trials within the general health system and developing innovative treatments tailored to the needs of African populations.”

The special event also saw the signing of an MOU between the ACRN and the Rwanda Biomedical Centre. The partnership aims to build a strong life sciences ecosystem through coordinated efforts, strengthen clinical research capacity, enhance regulatory systems, promote investment in health innovation, and improve access to novel therapeutics in Rwanda.
