I’m pleased to be at the Global AI Summit on Africa in Kigali, where leaders are committing to harnessing AI for a better future for Africa. The sessions have been thought-provoking; special thanks to Strive Masiywa, Founder and Executive Chairman of Econet Wireless, a pan-African telecommunications group operating in multiple countries across the continent, for his inspiring talk and his company’s launch of data centres on the continent.
“AI’s impact on jobs in Africa is significant, necessitating a shift in our education systems. Traditional reading and writing are no longer sufficient; we must prioritise math and coding skills. As a continent of hustlers, we need to equip our youth with the right skills to succeed. The necessary tools are available, and it’s crucial for our leaders to foster an investor-friendly environment that raises capital and drives growth in Africa,” said Strive.
Following the Summit, I visited a health post in Rwanda, one of over 300 facilities supported by Rwanda’s Society for Family Health (SFH) that is redefining care. This innovative model combines nurse entrepreneurship with technology to enhance decision-making and quality of care, backed by a centralised system for monitoring diseases and outcomes.
Seeing digital health and technology in action reinforces the power of data-driven insights to transform clinical care and fuel locally driven research and interventions.
