ACRN ‘s Inspirational Story at the Gates 25th Anniversary Celebration

May 30, 2025 | News

Earlier this month, ACRN CEO Dr. Tariro Makadzange joined notable figures, including Bill Gates and Mark Suzman, at Carnegie Hall in New York to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Gates Foundation.

The event featured a keynote address by Bill Gates, who announced plans to donate virtually all his wealth—approximately $200 billion—over the next 20 years, with the foundation set to close by December 31, 2045.

During the event, Gates reflected on the foundation’s achievements, including a 51% decline in childhood mortality from 2000 to 2022. He also discussed future initiatives focusing on global health, education, and agriculture, emphasising the urgency of addressing these issues amid declining government aid.

The celebration featured a panel discussion with Gates and Mark Suzman, CEO, moderated by Emma Tucker, Editor-in-Chief of The Wall Street Journal. They highlighted the foundation’s commitment to doubling its spending and accelerating efforts to combat diseases, improve education, and support agricultural development.

Dr. Tariro Magadzange shared a passionate personal account of what motivated her to pursue the dream that is the ACRN today.

“ACRN is not just a project – it is a bold continent-led vision to shape the future of clinical research for Africa. One day I hope to attend ACRN’s own 25th anniversary celebrations as Founding CEO Emeritus, proud to see how we have helped reimagine research and infrastructure and equity in Africa, on our terms.”

Established in 2000 by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, the foundation has been a transformative force in global health and development. It has invested over $100 billion to date, contributing to major initiatives like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Global Fund, which have collectively saved more than 80 million lives. Notable achievements include a 75% reduction in child deaths from rotavirus and significant progress toward eradicating polio.
