From Discovery to Impact: The IDRL Story

Oct 2, 2025 | News

During the recent Zimbabwe Annual Scientific Conference (ZASCO), hosted with support from the Zimbabwe National Quality Assurance Program (ZINQAP), Dr Alltalents Tutsirayi Murahwa, PhD, our Laboratory Director and Head of Research, shared the journey of ACRN’s Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory (IDRL).

From its early days in a converted peanut butter factory to contributing to HIV trials and supporting COVID-19 genomic sequencing, IDRL has remained guided by a consistent vision:
• Strengthening local capacity while upholding international standards
• Advancing diagnostics, sequencing, and immunology research
• Supporting Africa’s next generation of clinical trials
• Ensuring quality results that inform better health outcomes across Zimbabwe and the region

As a central laboratory within the ACRN network, IDRL is part of a growing ecosystem advancing research on HIV, HPV, SARS-CoV-2, and other infectious diseases. By linking laboratory science with clinical application, IDRL contributes to an Africa-led model of research that prioritizes both excellence and relevance to local communities.

At IDRL, quality is more than compliance — it is the foundation of the trust we build with patients, partners, and the scientific community.

This story reflects ACRN’s broader mission: enabling African laboratories and scientists to play a central role in shaping the future of health research on the continent.
