This year, what moved me most were the stories.
A young man in the U.S. who received gene therapy for sickle cell disease — his life transformed. And then, the story of another boy — just like him, but in Nigeria — who never had that chance. Same disease, different continent, very different fate.
These reminders are why global equity in access to novel therapies isn’t a “nice to have” — it’s a moral imperative.
And then, a moment of awe: a parent, once immersed in frog embryology, who thought reprogramming stem cells to replace destroyed beta cells might take three years… went on to dedicate 25+ years to solving one question:
Why does the immune system destroy beta cells, and how can we restore insulin production in a way that makes biological sense?
This is the convergence of science, sacrifice, and social responsibility. I’m inspired, challenged, and more committed than ever to ensuring innovation reaches everyone. Including everyone in Africa.
