This yearβs DPHARM: Disruptive Innovations to Modernize Clinical Trials conference offered a front-row seat to how the clinical research industry is evolving. It was an invaluable opportunity to see not only the exciting innovations but also the challenges that continue to face U.S. sitesβinsights that are shaping how we think differently about building clinical trial networks in Africa.
A few themes stood out:
Site sustainability and operations: The U.S. experience underscores the importance of strategic and operational decision-making in running successful sites. Clinical trials are not just about scienceβthey require strong business foundations.
Technology and agility: New tools are transforming how we measure trial performance, analyze data in real time, and pivot quickly when needed.
Networks and partnerships: It was great to connect with AMRC and learn more about how site networks in the U.S. operate, and what lessons can be applied or adapted for Africa.
For Africa and ACRN, this moment presents a unique opportunity. We have the chance to build fit-for-purpose site networks from the ground upβnetworks that ensure access, concentrate capabilities where they are most needed, and leverage technology to accelerate insights. By doing so, we can strengthen Africaβs participation in global clinical trials, while creating the foundation for a vibrant life sciences industry that extends beyond trials into diagnostics, manufacturing, and innovation.
