In 2025, the Africa Clinical Research Network (ACRN) embarked on a dynamic journey across the continent—conducting Expression of Interest (EOI) site visits in Nigeria, Mozambique, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa, Malawi and Kenya. These visits provided a front-row seat to Africa’s rapidly transforming clinical research ecosystem, revealing not only the continent’s diversity but also its immense potential and ambition.
West Africa: Momentum and Multicountry Readiness
In West Africa, institutions demonstrated a strong commitment to scientific excellence and a growing presence in global health research. In Nigeria, we were energized by the passion and readiness of research teams to engage in complex, multicountry clinical trials. Institutions are increasingly investing in digital infrastructure and workforce development—laying a solid foundation for high-quality, ethical research, even in resource-constrained settings.
Mozambique: Collaboration and Capacity Building
In Mozambique, the spirit of collaboration was palpable. Local leadership expressed a clear vision for building sustainable research capacity that meets both national priorities and global health challenges. The commitment to scientific rigor and the country’s determination to expand its international research footprint were truly commendable.
Ethiopia: Innovation Built on Legacy
In Ethiopia, long-standing biomedical institutions are embracing innovation—evidenced by new facilities, specialized centers, and renewed energy for South–South and global partnerships. The combination of deep institutional experience and forward-looking strategies is positioning Ethiopia as a regional research hub.
Kenya: Integration and Equity in Action
Kenyan sites showcased exceptional strengths in community engagement, robust laboratory systems, and a firm focus on health equity. With a strong track record in infectious diseases, implementation science, and data-driven approaches, Kenyan institutions are driving research that is both impactful and locally relevant.
A Shared Lesson: Partnership Is Power
Across all visits, one theme stood out clearly: collaboration is key. Whether between institutions, governments, communities, or funders, strategic partnerships are accelerating progress and enabling more inclusive research ecosystems. We saw firsthand how investing in people, technology, and networks creates the conditions for meaningful, African-led research.
Shaping the Future—Together
These insights reinforce ACRN’s belief that Africa is not only ready to participate more fully in global clinical trials—it is actively shaping their future. With the momentum and commitment, we’ve seen, achieving Africa’s goal of contributing 15% of global clinical research over the next decade is not only possible—it’s within reach.
